The St. Peter Port Lifeboat returns to the Island

The St. Peter Port Lifeboat returned to the Island at 1155hrs yesterday, refuelled and was back in service yesterday afternoon at 1407 hrs.

“Spirit of Guernsey” had been in Poole for a refit since 26 October, which had included a number of upgrades to the electrical and engine management systems, engine maintenance, removal of minor hull blistering, followed by painting. Her return had been delayed by the recent bad weather.

The relief lifeboat “Roger and Joy Freeman” returned to the UK.

The Bonita Rescue

On Sunday 13 December 1981, the cargo ship Bonita hit a hurricane in the English Channel. It was the beginning of a week of courage and loss that will always be remembered by the RNLI. This film features interviews with the Guernsey lifeboat volunteers who went to the aid of the crew of the Bonita 30 years ago - and the ship's Chief Engineer.

Aircraft Ditched in the Sea

At about 1540 on Saturday 12th November, 2011, a call was received by Guernsey Coastguard from Guernsey ATC advising that a light aircraft with two persons onboard had disappeared from radar approximately 22 miles West of the Casquets lighthouse. This was followed soon after by a request from the French Coastguard station at Crossma Joburg for a launch of the Alderney and Guernsey Lifeboats and for the Channel Islands Airsearch aircraft. Guernsey Coastguard was in the process of activating the pagers for these assets.

Missing Diver

At 1205 on Bank Holiday Monday, 29th August, 2011, Guernsey & Jersey Coastguard received a call from “Le Viathan” a Jersey R.I.B. diving approximately 5nm SE of Guernsey, that one of the divers was overdue.
Channel Islands Airsearch, St Peter Port lifeboat, Brecqhou helicopter, and private craft started searching for the missing diver.

The Diver was found at 1231 on the surface by a passing yacht called “Magical” alive and well, approximately 1.5nm west of the dive start position. Le Viathan recovered the missing diver from the Yt Magical and returned back to Jersey.

Vessel Abandoned/Not Under Command

At 1109 on 17th July, 2011 Guernsey Coastguard received a call from the Police advising that a member of the public had noted a yacht about 1 to 1 1/2 miles SW of Pleinmont Point apparently adrift.

St Peter Port Lifeboat Coxswain Buz White awarded MBE

St Peter Port Lifeboat Coxswain Buz White was awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list for his services to maritime charities.

Buz dedicated his MBE to his fellow crew members who make the marine rescue service possible.

Vessel Taking in Water

Following a mobile phone call to the coxswain from the casualty, advising that the vessel was taking in water and was at the North end of Sark, the coxswain contacted Guernsey Coastguard and requested the lifeboat crew be alerted. Guernsey Coastguard having alerted the crew transmitted a Mayday Relay message, which was responded to by several local vessels. The nearest to the casualty Brecqhou Lass proceeded to the scene and stood by until relieved by the lifeboat. Guernsey Coastguard wishes to record their sincere thanks to those vessels which responded to the Mayday Relay message.
