Rescue services alerted for a Missing Diver close to St Martins Point
A call was received by St Peter Port Radio from a local dive vessel, “Stormdrift” that a diver from the vessel was 40 minutes overdue from surfacing from his dive.
As this area is a known difficult spot for divers due to strong tides the Lifeboat, Airsearch and St John`s Marine Crews were immediately called to assist in the search for this missing diver in the area of St Martin`s Point and out to the west along the south coast. The Lifeboat was on scene at 1104 searching the area and bays around St Martin`s Point. Crossma offered the services of their Helicopter and several local boats also joined the search.
1107 A 999 call was received from a member of the public that the diver we were searching for was standing in the Jerbourg Point Car Park after having walked up the steps from St Martin’s Point.
The diver had suffered an equipment failure and become separated from his Surface Marker Buoy, hence the problem.
Once the identity of the diver had been confirmed; all Rescue Services were stood down.
The Harbour Office is very grateful to the Rescue Services and the boats that responded and joined in the search.
